What’s most important is to remember that design LEADS the impetus of your project, and design is what creates your enjoyment of it. The design perspective drives every decision DURING the building process, so that both big choices and small details addressed at the building site create the home that was designed for how you will use it and how you want to feel in it.
Currently, we work with outside contractors your project. We ensure the design is being built not just according to the blueprint plan, but also according to the intention and vision driving the plan, so that every field decision maintains the integrity of the plan.
It’s true that the builder’s job is to follow the plan, and yet unexpected variables create new choices on the site every day. To address these variables, a licensed contractor must find a solution that adheres to building code regulations, and yet there are often several code-approved solutions with varying degrees of impact on the design. While a good builder makes building code regulations top priority, it’s not their primary job to recognize how a minor change may have big implications on the design.
Here’s an illustration from a real project. The design on this project depended on “centering” in order to create a sense of balance and harmony. When rough plumbing was installed slightly different than the plan (but within code), the builder made adjustments accordingly (all within code, of course). These seemingly simply adjustments and detail changes in the field (again, there are field decisions every day), could have disrupted the underlying (and overarching) sense of balance and harmony that was key to the design. We were able to direct the builder to a different solution that maintained the integrity of the design concept.
